The West Johnston music program began with the opening of the school in
the fall of 2002.
Our Directors
- David Duffy and Garrett Griffin -
David S. Duffy is a native of Collinsville,
Virginia.
A 1985 graduate of Fieldale-Collinsville High
School, he attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he studied Bass Trombone
performance and Music Education. He graduated in 1989 with a
Bachelor's Degree in Music Education Magna Cum Laude. Mr. Duffy has taught at Powhatan
High School, Nelson County High School, John D. Bassett Middle School, Bassett
High School serving as director and assistant director of many of the ensembles
at these schools all located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He is a member or past member of
VMEA, MENVC, NJEA, NEA, VBODA and was excited about starting teaching here in the
state of North Carolina. He has designed for several Drum and Bugle Corps and
has been a member of the National Board of Directors of Winter Guard
International. He is an active adjudicator and is working to further his career
as a national adjudicator in the future.
Garrett L.
Griffin was raised in Emerald
Isle, North Carolina. 
In the fall of 2000, he was accepted
at East Carolina University. He studied euphonium under Dr.
Jeff Jarvis and composition with Dr. Ed Jacobs. In the
spring of 2005 Garrett graduated with a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Music Education. Garrett has worked with several
successful band in North Carolina, including Northern Nash
High School and West Carteret High School. He has also spent
time as staff member with high schools outside of the state
including Norwood High School in Norwood, Massachusetts. In
the fall of 2005, he was asked to assist with the UCLA
marching Band in Los Angles, California. Mr.
Griffin also runs the visual technique program in the fall as well as the concert band and a
brass ensemble, which is often requested at banquets and other engagements
within the community.
Mr. Bill Register is our Percussion Director.

He
is considered one of the finest percussion instructors in the nation. He joined
our band program in the summer of 2007. His experience includes four years as a U.S.
Marine Band Musician, seven years as the Director of percussion with the
Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps, and ten years as percussion instructor at
Fort Mill High School, South Carolina. While at Fort Mill, his indoor
percussion ensemble won the Winter Guard International Scholastic World
Concert Championship in 2003 and 2005. |
